Press Release

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Lots of states have official flowers and official birds. Texas has official footwear. Vermont has an official flavor. And several states have official muffins. Kentucky now has an official state sports car – the Chevrolet Corvette.

Governor Steve Beshear performed a ceremonial signing of House Bill 104 at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant on Tuesday. He signed the official bill on April 26.

Gov. Beshear at the Corvette Plant to make the Corvette the Official Sports Car of KY!

“As home to the Corvette

plant in Bowling Green, Kentuckians have long considered the Corvette to be Kentucky’s sports car and a great symbol of Kentucky pride and craftsmanship,””Beshear said. “House Bill 104, which was passed during the 2010 General Assembly, now makes that designation official. It was with great pleasure that I signed HB 104 into law.”

Bowling Green is home to both the General Motors Corvette Assembly Plant (the only place in the world Chevrolet Corvettes have been manufactured since 1981) and the National Corvette Museum, a non-profit foundation with a mission of celebrating the invention of the Corvette and preserving its past, present and future since 1994.

“This signing is particular important because the event is being held at the Corvette Plant – the only place in the world where Corvettes are built. I think it is important that the community comes together to celebrate the now Official Sports Car of Kentucky and America’s favorite sports car,” said Rep. Jody Richards, D-Bowling Green, who was the primary sponsor of HB 104.

“This workforce uses precision and craftsmanship to build each and every Corvette, and they have been doing so in Kentucky for 29 years,” said GM Bowling Green Assembly Plant Manager Bob Parcell. “Our employees are excited to witness the ceremonial signing of the bill, and we appreciate the efforts of the state to add our iconic product to the list of state symbols.”

In addition to Gov. Beshear, other scheduled speakers included Rep. Richards; Plant Manager Parcell; Kentucky State Sen. Mike Reynolds; Kentucky State Rep. Jim DeCesare; Warren County Judge Executive Mike Buchanon, Elaine Walker, Bowling Green Mayor Elaine Walk; and UAW Local 2164 Chairman Shane Colvard

The act reads as follows:
AN ACT designating the Corvette as the official state sports car of Kentucky.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:
The Corvette is named and designated the official state sports car of Kentucky.

Gotta love it when parents raise their kids right.  If the kid ever does get a Corvette when he grows up I hope he is shown this vid.

Should the postion of official Corvette ambassador ever come to fruition, Oliver Gavin would easily be the standard bearer.  Not only does he race fast, he runs pretty fast too, in a marathon.  And in April he ran a marathon to benefit kids fighting cancer.  Thanks to his efforts and that of the British Racing Drivers Club, thier goal of rasing £100,000 was met.  More on the story is HERE.  Well done Oliver.

Looks like an awesome road trip to promote the Back to the Bricks Car Show.

Eric Lux is interviewed by Speed Channel after he got tangled up with Tuner Racing’s Billy Auberlan and was eliminated from the Mid-Ohio race due to an accident.

It was a tough outing collectively for the  Corvette competitors Saturday in the GT class at Mid-Ohio.  First to DNF was the #31 Whelen car which limped into the pits after just one lap with engine failure due to a dropped cylinder.  Next permanently to the pits was the #28 LG Motorsports car which got taken out after tangling with the Turner BMW driver, Billy Auberlan.  Finally the # 7 Leighton Reese car led more then 40 laps of the event but appeared to gamble on their fuel strategy and lost the lead for good to BMW and settled for seventh place.

July3, 2010 is the next race the Brumos Porsche 250 at the Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, FL.

Leader Dogs has been the designated charity of the GMC Corvette Car Set club for many years; the club has donated over $100,000 to Leader Dogs over the years.  Excellent work by the club.

You can put one more check in the box classified as broad appeal for the Corvette thanks to the Kentucky Tourism Council.  Just like hamburgers, hot dogs and apple pie, the many generations of Corvette can rouse the interest of young and old alike across many nationalitites.  So it is certainly fitting that the council has named the National Corvette Homecoming as one of the Bluegrass areas “Top Ten” events for 2010.  Criteria for consideration used by the council’s panel of impartial jusges include; the popularity of the event, its impact on the local tourism economy and its cultural and historical significance.

According to the National Corvette Homecoming’s web page, “Since 1981, the NCH has attracted Corvettes from all over the US and Canada.  It is the annual gathering and celebration for Corvettes of all years to return home to Bowling Green, KY home of the Corvette Assembly Plant and Museum.  Corvette owners can network, learn, trade and join in friendly competition and other exciting activities.”

This year’s event takes place July 16-18, 2010 at the Sloan Convention Center in Bowling Green, KY and will include vendors, crafts, an all-Corvette parade, an open cruise-in, seminars and Corvettes from all generations on display competing  for awards and prizes.

Congratulations NCH from all of us at Corvette Mafia.
